Small start, big finish

Bikers for Babies is more than just a fundraiser to Brianna Clark, 12. It’s an opportunity to support a cause that saves the lives of thousands, including her own.

Brianna was born 3.5 months early and weighed only 1 pound 10.5 ounces. Being so premature, she had difficulty breathing on her own. Thanks to the help of March of Dimes, the doctors were able to provide her with treatments to help her breath.

In return, Brianna is passionate about helping the March of Dimes so they can continue to help other premature children survive as well.

“It is pretty cool,” Clark said. “I like the fact that I get to be involved with it (March of Dimes).”

The next fundraiser for the March of Dimes is the 20th annual Central New York Bikers for Babies event, where bikers from multiple areas make a ride from their starting location to the main event at Jamesville Beach Park.

The event is the oldest and longest running bike event in CNY, and throughout its 20 years has been raising money that goes toward the March of Dimes, explained Johanna Kmetz, the March of Dimes division director.

“In the past, we have raised $80,000,” Kmetz said. “We have had over 750 bikers, along with passengers. With this being the 20th year, we expect to see a much bigger number to help with that.”

All of the money raised during the event stays right in Central New York to directly benefit the March of Dimes. With the money, the March of Dimes is able to continue with their mission to help with pregnancy and baby health.

According to a report from the March of Dimes, there are 15 million babies born too soon each year. With events like the Bikers for Babies ride, premature babies are able to get the help they need to survive, like Brianna did.

As for Brianna, who was once given a 50/50 chance of survival, serving as an ambassador for the organization that helped save her life couldn’t make her happier:

“They were there when I needed help,” she said. “Now I want to be there for them.”
